Work experience

Relevant work experience (including voluntary roles and shadowing opportunities) can offer great insight of the complexities, demands and strategies of current healthcare practice and the benefits they obtain from caring for people and working in teams. However, we recognise that arranging, undertaking and effective reflection on face-to-face experiences requires a great deal of time and effort, and may not be possible for all applicants, so it is not mandatory.

Widening participation

Students who successfully complete a Pathways to Birmingham programme will receive special consideration from admissions tutors. For widening participation applicants who are made an offer following interview, the offer is ABB.
See: www.birmingham.ac.uk/teachers/pupil-opportunities/post-16/Pathways-to-Birmingham.aspx

In addition, Birmingham Medical School is a member of the UKWPMED consortium.

Applicants who attend a state (not independent) school that meets our threshold for either GCSE or A Levels (see website), or those who have been in receipt of free school meals (FSM) during their secondary education will receive a contextual score. The score we allocate is based on the POLAR4 quintile determined by your the postcode.

This contextual score is added to the scores for GCSE performance and UCAT to derive a weighted application score.

We would want to see that candidates have a good understanding of the role of the medic, and a realistic and informed view of what the profession entails. Work experience is a great way to gain this. Work experience is strongly advised but is not a requirement for a Cambridge Medicine application.

As selection for medical school implies selection for the medical profession, admissions decisions are informed by national guidance on what makes a good doctor. For example:

- The Medical Schools Council's Consensus Statement on the Role of the Doctor
- Guiding Principles for the Admission of Medical Students.
