Academic requirements

Degree (graduates only)

2:1 honours degree in any subject. 

  • We will consider your application if you achieved a 2.2 degree at undergraduate level, if you have also successfully completed or are due to complete a taught master’s degree at merit or above. 
  • A-level Biology at grade B for non-bioscience degrees with insufficient biology content. 
  • a minimum of GCSE Grade 6 (B) or equivalent in maths. 
A Levels

AAA: must include biology (or human biology) and chemistry.

We do not accept citizenship studies, critical thinking, general studies, or global perspectives.

Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers

AA Advanced Higher in Biology and Chemistry. AAAAB at Higher including Biology and Chemistry, Maths and English Language. Grade A must be achieved in Biology and Chemistry.

International Baccalaureate

34 points overall including HL6 in Biology, HL6 in Chemistry or 6,6,6 in 3 HL Certificates with HL 6 in Biology, HL6 in Chemistry.

GCSEs

A minimum of six GCSEs at Level 7 (A), including both biology or human biology and chemistry. You must have achieved a minimum of a grade 6 (B) in maths and English language. 

A minimum of six GCSEs should have been studied over a two-year period and the required grades achieved in one sitting.  

We will consider resits for no more than one GCSE subject resit in maths, English language, biology, human biology, chemistry or double science qualifications.

The achieved overall resit grade must be a minimum of Level 6 (B) in maths or English language, and a minimum of Level 7 (A) in biology, human biology, chemistry or double science (7,7) qualifications

Non-academic requirements

Work experience

Applicants are usually expected to complete regular work experience when applying for medicine. This can be:

  • volunteering in a care related setting
  • volunteering with disadvantaged groups
  • paid employment in a job working with the general public

We are not expecting any in person NHS work experience. Your application for 2027 entry will not be negatively affected if you’ve been unable to complete any in person NHS work experience.

Admission test

UCAT.

All applicants must sit the UCAT in the same year as the application is made for the course. Applicants who achieve a UCAT SJT grade of Band 4 will not be considered for this course.

UCAT sections are scored separately and we do not have a fixed UCAT threshold for interview.

Interview method

Interviews are likely to be in person MMIs for home fee status applicants and online MMIs for international fee status applicants for 2027 entry.

Teaching method

These methods typically include a combination of lectures, group-based learning, clinical and communication skills practice, practical and simulation activities. Clinical experience is integrated throughout the programme, with increasing time spent on clinical placement as you progress. You’ll also have regular meetings with your educational supervisor throughout the course.

We do not use/consider predicted A level grades.

Resit policy

We consider resits for up to two A levels as long as: 

  • you have completed your A levels in the last 12 months
  • you have already obtained at least ABB with at least one A in Biology/Human Biology or Chemistry 
  • your achieved resit grades meet AAA and include Biology (or Human Biology) and Chemistry.

Widening participation criteria

To qualify for a standard contextual offer (these offers are usually one grade lower than the entry requirements) you must have Home-UK fee status and your current or most recent school cannot be an independent school. 

One of the following must also apply:

  • You live in an area with high levels of deprivation – check your postcode below
  • You have completed one of the following programmes not hosted by the University of Nottingham: a UNIQ summer school, Sutton Trust summer school or another Sutton Trust programme at post-16
  • You have refugee status from the Home Office*
  • You have spent more than three months in care*

*If you have refugee status or have spent more than three months in care, you are still eligible for a standard contextual offer if your current or most recent school is an independent school. 

Enhanced contextual offers 

These offers are usually two grades lower than the entry requirements  

To qualify for an enhanced contextual offer, you must have Home-UK fee status and your current or most recent school cannot be an independent school. You must also meet one of the following:   

  • You have refugee status from the Home Office   
  • You have spent more than three months in care and have evidence of this verified by our widening participation team by 15 December   
  • You must have been in the care of the local authority or looked after under a court order. Informal or private care arrangements are not included 
  • You have receivedFree School Meals (please see full details above) 
  • You have completed one of the following University of Nottingham outreach programmes:   
  • Realising Opportunities at any RO partner university   
  • Sutton Trust Summer School at the University of Nottingham   
  • Sutton Trust Pathways to Medicine at the University of Nottingham   
  • Ambition 16-18 at the University of Nottingham as a Tier 1 member 
Contextual offer

Home UK fee status applicants whose backgrounds or personal circumstances have impacted their academic performance and meet University of Nottingham contextual criteria may receive a reduced offer. 

  • Standard Contextual Offer: AAB with at least one A in biology or chemistry  
  • Enhanced Contextual Offer: ABB with at least one A in biology or chemistry   

Elite athletes (as defined by the University of Nottingham Department of Sport criteria): 

  • Contextual Offer: AAB with at least one A in biology or chemistry
