NIHR Clinical Lecturer: Therapeutics and Clinical Pharmacology Theme

Post duration 4 years (1.0 whole time equivalent) or up to 6 years part time

An opportunity has arisen for a suitable candidate to join the NIHR Clinical Integrated Academic Training Programme at the University of Southampton, as an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer within area of Therapeutics and Clinical Pharmacology, hosted by one of three clinical specialties (Public Health, Child Health, or Rheumatology). Applications are invited within any of these three specialties. This post will be dependent on the specialty of the successful applicant. The post supports research activities (0.5 WTE or more) and clinical activity/speciality training (up to 0.5 WTE). 

Public Health

Programme Leads: Dr Simon Fraser

Opportunities in the Public Health group are broad and include joining ongoing research in the epidemiology of chronic liver disease, kidney disease, multimorbidity and pharmaco-epidemiology. There are also opportunities in alcohol related care pathways, nutritional epidemiology, maternal and child health, HIV and sexual health, and Health and Justice. We are members of the Wessex Alcohol Research Collaborative and have strong links to local NHS hepatology and alcohol teams. There are opportunities in the NIHR ARC Wessex ‘Long Term Conditions’ theme where we lead on medicines optimisation, treatment burden and deprescribing. We also lead the ‘Healthy Communities’ (Public Health) theme which includes work on hepatitis C, childhood obesity, offender health, domestic abuse and food security.  

Public health training is tailored to the requirements of the registrar, and will involve training at other locations in Wessex, including Local Authorities, and Public Health England to ensure successful progression towards CCT. There is also opportunity for attachments to the national NIHR funding organisation based in Southampton (NETSCC) to gain insight into research funding processes, including the NIHR Public Health Research programme and the Health Technology Assessment programme. 

Salary: £50,017 - £53,077 (CADT scale, for those below ST3 on 3 August 2016); £35,155 to £62,179 (AMNL scale, for those at or above ST3 on 3 August 2016)

Child Health

Programme Lead: Professor Graham Roberts

Opportunities include joining funded work at the University of Southampton and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, including research into using ‘omic approaches within paediatric asthma and allergy or paediatric inflammatory bowel to personalise management; cell biology and genomics, transcriptomics and proteomic approaches in viral respiratory infection or primary ciliary dyskinesia; diagnosis and personalised management of growth and genomic imprinting disorders; optimising growth in neonatal nutrition; and understanding neurodevelopmental trajectories post neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy.   

Clinical training is tailored to the requirements of the trainee, and may encompass training at other centres to ensure successful GRID Training. Locally the clinical supervisor will be one of the research active child health consultants. The clinical timetable would be tailored to the training needs of the post-holder. 

Rheumatology

Programme Lead: Professor Elaine Dennison

Opportunities include working with an established cohort, the Hertfordshire Cohort Study, to consider biomarkers of rapid osteoarthritis progression, and with a cohort that is currently being established (SALSA) that will allow use of novel imaging methodologies in assessment in a randomised controlled trial of a novel agent for the treatment of osteoarthritis. This work is sited at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Centre, University of Southampton, which is at the global forefront of research into risk factors for chronic musculoskeletal and metabolic diseases through life. Clinical training will be undertaken 0.5fte as a Specialist Registrar on the Wessex Rheumatology Scheme, in posts matching the successful candidate’s training requirements.

General Requirements

In this post-doctoral role, the successful candidate will have substantial experience of the relevant research areas, a proven track record of high-quality original research publications, the ability to work well in a multidisciplinary, multi-professional team. General Surgery, Child Health and Respiratory Medicine applicants will have a corresponding NTN. 

A satisfactory Criminal Records Bureau disclosure at Enhanced level is required for this post.
