This role is available 07/01/2019 - 03/01/2022 on a fixed term contract, secondment or consultancy basis.
The NIHR Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre is looking for a consultant advisor to support the academic content of the MRC/NIHR Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation (EME) Programme (http://www.nets.nihr.ac.uk/programmes/eme) in succession to Professor Duncan Young who is retiring at the end of the year.
You will join our team of research managers, senior scientific and medical advisors who work collaboratively to support the research programmes managed by NETSCC. This senior post offers an exceptional opportunity for you (and your institution) to gain insight into and direct experience of translational research funding, and to particularly support the EME programme.
You will use your experience of leading clinical research and your clinical knowledge to support the NETSCC research management team, applicants, the Programme Director and Funding Committee Chair and EME chief investigators. You will be highly-respected in your own area but will also have demonstrated your ability to engage with people from a broad range of backgrounds. You will provide leadership and career development to the research management team along with the other clinical and scientific advisors.
This role is intellectually challenging, and you will need to quickly assimilate information in order to provide advice and input across a very broad range of disease areas, methodologies and technologies. One day you might be talking to a clinician scientist about the extent of their proof of concept for a basket trial and the next to a chief investigator experiencing challenges with delivering their ongoing phase 3 trial of a complex psychological intervention. With this in mind, you are likely to be a clinician whose experience spans a range of disease areas and who has an interest in disease and treatment mechanisms.
You will support the development of the programme’s research portfolio through contributing to discussion at the Programme Strategy Advisory Group, identifying and developing opportunities for commissioned calls and advising potential applicants. You will also support the Programme Funding Committee to iterate with applicants for example, through high quality feedback or facilitating workshops. You will play an active role in post-award management of studies, predominantly those funded by the EME programme. More broadly, you will be an ambassador for the NIHR programmes, attending or presenting at meetings and events. There will be opportunities to work across the NIHR research programmes managed at NETSCC and the wider NIHR.
For an informal discussion about the role with the present post-holder please contact Professor Duncan Young at duncan.young@soton.ac.uk.
Remuneration is negotiable depending on whether the role is taken up as a secondment or through a consultancy agreement.
