Bioscience graduates will be considered with minimum 2:1 (upper second class honours) undergraduate degree (or international equivalent) in a Biosciences subject.  All other graduates will be considered with minimum 2:1 AND grades AA at A-Level in both Biology and Chemistry (or international equivalent).

A Levels and Scottish Highers

A levels at A*AA, including Biology and Chemistry. Applicants taking linear A levels in England will be required to pass the practical endorsement in all science subjects. A levels in General Studies, Critical Thinking, Thinking Skills and Global Perspectives are not accepted.

We will NOT accept applications from people who have:

  • achieved below 2i in a previous degree unless there is evidence of substantial subsequent
  • experience in a healthcare-based or academically and/or professionally demanding career
  • commenced an Access diploma less that 3 years after completing A levels, other qualifications or a degree

60 credits, with 45 of these credits coming from units which are concerned with academic subject content at Level 3 and graded; the remaining 15 credits come from ungraded Level 2 or Level 3 units. All units (60 credits) must be passed, with all graded level 3 units at distinction.

GCSEs and Scottish Nationals

A minimum of 6 GCSEs grade 6 or above required in Maths, English Language, Biology and Chemistry or Dual Science.

Please note that applicants applying with these minimums are unlikely to be shortlisted to interview and that scoring is based on 8 GCSEs.

Applicants must have achieved or be predicted a minimum of an upper second-class honours (or equivalent) in their Bachelor's or integrated Master's degree in order to be considered. We will consider graduate applicants from any discipline, provided the applicant meets our minimum GCSE requirements and has BBB or ABC at A-level including a B grade in either Chemistry or Biology. Applicants must have completed, or be in the final year of their degree when they apply.

We will not consider a second undergraduate degree, Masters or PhD in lieu of obtaining 2:1 or 1st class honours in your first degree. Graduates in their final year who do not provide a suitable academic reference from their current institution will not be considered

We will consider Scottish Advanced Highers either alone or in combination with A-levels. Our standard offer is AAA, to include Chemistry or Biology, and one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology. We will also consider the two sciences at Advanced Higher (grade AA) plus 3 other subjects at Highers level (grades AAB). We will not consider you if you are only taking Scottish Highers.

GCSEs: Applicants must have achieved at least a grade B or 6 in English Language (as a first language), Maths, and two sciences (including Chemistry and Biology or Double Science).

We also give an adjusted offer of two grades lower for students on the Realising Opportunities Programme and Access Leicester: Medicine programmes.  Those on these access programmes are automatically invited to interview providing they meet our minimum requirements and are not in the lowest two deciles of UCAT or have band 4 in the SJT. See website for details.

If you are applying with A levels or the IB, you must meet the following GCSE requirements unless otherwise stated.

We require a minimum of 6 GCSEs at Level 7 (A). These 6 GCSEs at Level 7 must include chemistry and biology – or double science if you have not taken the individual science subjects – and may include maths and English language. If maths and English language are not included in your 6 GCSEs at Level 7, you will need a minimum grade of Level 6 in both subjects. When selecting for interview, GCSE grades are scored and allocated points. We score a maximum of 8 GCSEs including the required subject grades.

If you are applying with a degree, you must have achieved at least a level 4 (C) in maths and English language.

Work experience

Please note, we are not expecting any work experience to have taken place or be ongoing after March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. We will however be looking for knowledge of the profession and an understanding of the scope of the role and we may ask about this during your interview. If possible we'd advise that you speak to someone working in the NHS to ensure you are making an informed choice about your career in medicine. We expect you to demonstrate a commitment to caring for people and a realistic idea of what working as a doctor entails.

We welcome applications from graduates or those in their final year of study towards an undergraduate degree. You should have achieved or be predicted a minimum of an upper second (2:1) honours degree and should have achieved a minimum of BBB at A-level (32 IB) in your first sitting. Applicants with a relevant science degree are exempted from our subject specification at A-Level, but must still meet the BBB academic standard. Relevant subjects include most Biomedical and Life Sciences disciplines or other approved courses

A Levels and Scottish Highers

A levels - AAA including:

Chemistry or Biology/Human Biology; and
One of the following subjects from Chemistry; Biology/Human Biology; Physics; Psychology; Mathematics or Further Mathematics.

Scottish Highers
We require 4 Highers at grades AAAA by the end of Secondary 5. Grades should be achieved in the same sitting at first attempt. English language and any science subject (Maths, Chemistry or Biology) not taken at Higher/Advanced Higher must have been achieved at SCQF level 5 (National 5, Intermediate II or Standard Grade Credit level grade 2 or above). Applicants also need Scottish Advanced Highers in addition to Scottish Highers.

Scottish Advanced Highers

We require at least two Advanced Highers at grades AA by the end of Secondary 6. Any of the following combinations are acceptable:

  • three Advanced Highers at AAA, including Chemistry or Biology; a second science (from
  • Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Psychology or Physics); plus one other rigorous academic subject;
  • two Advanced Highers at grades AA, plus one A2-level subject at grade A (subjects as above);
  • two Advanced Highers at grades AA, plus one new Higher at grade A (subjects to include Chemistry or Biology at Advanced Higher, plus one other science at Advanced Higher, and a further subject at Higher level).

You will also need Scottish Highers in addition to Scottish Advanced Highers.

International Baccalaureate

37 points are required overall (to include core points) with at least 766 at higher level. If Maths and English Language are not offered as part of the Diploma, they should be offered at GCSE or IGCSE at grade B (6) or above. We accept both Maths options as part of the Diploma.

Major subjects must include Chemistry or Biology, plus another science (one from Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Psychology or Mathematics) and one further subject at Higher Level. We accept both Mathematics options as part of the Diploma.

GCSEs and Scottish Nationals

We require at least seven GCSEs at grade A (7) or A* (8+).

English Language, Mathematics and at least two science subjects are required at GCSE minimum grade B (6). If Dual Award Science or Core and Additional Science are offered, the minimum required is BB (66).

For applicants whose status has been confirmed as WP+ or WP++ using the University's Contextual Data Eligibility tool, we will accept 6 GCSEs at grade 7 (A) or above.

Access to HE Diplomas

Your Access course must be science-based and you must have 60 credits overall with 45 credits at Level 3. We require a minimum of 15 graded credits each in Biology and Chemistry. We require Distinctions in all Level 3 credits.

Personal statement

You will be required to write a personal statement as part of your UCAS application, and this will be seen by the admissions departments for each of your course choices.

At Manchester, we do not usually read the personal statement that comes to us via UCAS; instead, we ask applicants to complete a Non-Academic Information Form.

There are some circumstances where we will look at the personal statement, so it is important that you complete it. The sorts of areas we would expect to see covered in the personal statement are as follows:

  • reasons for choosing/changing to medicine
  • amount of work experience in a caring role
  • knowledge/experience of the UK healthcare system
  • interests/hobbies

Work experience

We require applicants to undertake some relevant work experience prior to application in order that they can gain some insight into what the role of a doctor involves.
We are not looking for a particular number of hours doing a specific type of work experience. We are trying to ascertain that you have a clear idea of what it is like to study medicine and what the role entails.


Shadowing doctors in a hospital/GP setting is not essential or considered to be a substitute for hands-on caring work experience. Applicants should be aware that we may request confirmation of their work experience.

We make some contextual offers automatically (normally AAB or ABB) for applicants who meet specific WP criteria and for those applicants enrolled on our WP programmes (e.g. MAP/PWAP). We also participate in the UKWPMED scheme. See website for details.

Work experience

Emphasis on applicants being able to show a commitment to caring which can be accomplished in a number of ways other than in a hospital or general practice setting, such as volunteering in an elderly care home, hospice, nursery or helping someone less fortunate. The medical school is also interested in individuals who have shown commitment to working as part of a team over a prolonged period of time in any area, including voluntary, sports, other extra-curricular activities. Work experience is not part of the scored entry criteria.

Work experience

We are not expecting you to have had any in person NHS work experience. However, we expect you to understand the role of a doctor and what it is like to work in the NHS today. If possible we'd advise you to speak to someone working in the NHS to ensure you are making an informed choice about a career in medicine. We usually expect applicants to have reflected on regular work experience that might include volunteering in a care related setting, volunteering with disadvantaged groups, or paid employment in a job working with the general public. We expect you to demonstrate a commitment to caring for people and a realistic idea of what working as a doctor entails.
