The Transfer of Information (TOI) process helps medical students move confidently from medical school into the Foundation Programme. It ensures that foundation schools receive essential information about each applicant’s health, educational needs and professional conduct, so that appropriate support can be put in place from day one.
What is the TOI process?
Every applicant to the Foundation Programme must complete a TOI form. This form includes:
- Health and welfare – to identify any support or adjustments needed for health conditions or disabilities.
- Educational progress – to highlight areas where additional training or supervision may be helpful.
- Professional performance – to share outcomes of any formal professionalism investigations during medical school.
Why it matters
The TOI process ensures patient safety, supports trainee wellbeing and helps meet General Medical Council (GMC) requirements. It allows foundation schools to plan placements and provide tailored support, without affecting where a student is placed.
How it works
Medical schools guide students through the process, review completed forms, and share them securely with foundation schools. Information is only shared with those who need it, and all data is handled in line with data protection laws.
