Preparing for the Applied Knowledge Test

All graduating students are required to pass the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) as part of the medical degree. The MLA is formed of two assessments: the Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment (CPSA) and the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT).

The Medical School AKT (MS AKT) assesses how well medical students can apply their knowledge to real-life clinical scenarios. It is led by universities and quality assured by the General Medical Council. We work with medical schools to support the development and delivery of this assessment.

Preparing for the MLA

Your medical education and training provide the best preparation for the MLA, including the MS AKT. The team behind the assessment consists of academics who lead undergraduate medical education in UK medical schools.

You do not need to pay for private paid-for courses or textbooks – our MS AKT resources are always free. No staff involved in setting the MS AKT contribute to private courses or materials. Unofficial resources may not reflect the quality or accuracy of those provided through the Medical Schools Council, which are developed and quality assured by the experts who design the assessment.

AKT student webinars

We host webinars to help medical students understand the MS AKT and what to expect. These sessions offer an overview of the assessment and include a live Q&A with the Chairs of the AKT operational groups. You can watch the latest webinar below.
