Academic requirements

Degree (graduates only)

A minimum of an upper second class (2:1) Honours degree in a relevant life science subject. This should be the first degree obtained.

A Levels

Standard: AAA

Essential subjects: A-level – Either Chemistry or Biology and another science (Mathematics is an acceptable science).

  • A-levels to be in the same sitting i.e. to be achieved in the same year, two years after GCSE.
  • The third subject can be your own choice; we have no preference.
  • If not studied at A-level (A2), we also require Biology or Chemistry at grade 7/A at GCSE.
  • If not studied at A-level (A2), we also require Mathematics and English at grade 6/B at GCSE.
Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers

Standard: AAABB

Essential subjects: Higher – either Chemistry or Biology and another science (Mathematics is an acceptable science).

  • The other three Highers can be your own choice and this choice of subjects will not influence the assessment.
  • Highers must be in one sitting.
  • If not studied at Higher, we also require biology or chemistry at grade A at National 5.
  • If not studied at Higher, we also require mathematics and English at grade B at National 5.
  • Achievement at Standard Grade/National 5 will also be taken into account.
  • Standard offers may be conditional, based on three Advanced Highers / ‘crash’ Highers taken in 6th year, at BBB grades.
  • Candidates who have completed S6 and have not attained the 6th year entry requirements are unlikely to be considered.
International Baccalaureate
37 points, including 6, 6, 6 at Higher Level.
GCSEs

If not studied at A-level, we also require Biology or Chemistry at grade 7/A at GCSE. If not studied at A-level, we also require Mathematics and English at grade 6/B at GCSE. 

Scottish Nationals

If not studied at Higher, we also require Biology or Chemistry at grade A at National 5. If not studied at Higher, we also require Mathematics and English at grade B at National 5.

Teaching method
What is Case-Based Learning?

Case-Based Learning (CBL) is a tutorial-based, group learning approach where students work through real-world clinical scenarios across subjects such as cardiology, respiratory, and gastroenterology.

During each session, you’ll identify key learning outcomes and use them to guide your study, following a patient case from initial presentation through to diagnosis and management.

The goal of CBL is to help students apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations. This better prepares you for reviewing real cases during clinical placements.

We do not accept resits. 

Non-academic requirements

Work experience

Clinical experience is not required. There are many opportunities to learn valuable skills that do not require individuals to be in healthcare settings.

Personal statement

The personal statement is discussed at interview but is not scored, ranked or taken into account for interview selection.

Admission test

All applicants must sit the UCAT test in their year of application. There is no cut off score.

Widening participation criteria

As part of its admissions process the University will take the following contextual factors into consideration when assessing an application.  The list below is not exhaustive and the University may take into account other factors based on your circumstances, at its sole discretion, which is inline with this policy. 

Postcode (within SIMD Quintile 1)

If your home postcode, at the time you apply, is in a Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) quintile 1 zone. 

Free School Meals 

If you are or have been receiving free school meals.

Carer

If you are or have been someone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without your support.

Care Experienced

If you are or have been a looked after person (Care experienced), including but not limited to; adopted children who were previously looked-after. This care may have been provided in one of many different settings, such as in residential care, foster care, kinship care or through being looked-after at home with a supervision requirement.

Estranged

If you are or have been estranged from your parents (normally not in contact with them for at least 12 months as a result of a permanent breakdown in your relationship, with no sign of this being resolved).

Refugee or Asylum Seeker 

If you are a refugee, an asylum seeker or have been granted humanitarian protection and are resident in the UK.

Any other contextual circumstances

Our contextual admissions policy is intended to recognise factors that may have disrupted or affected your education. If there are other contextual factors outside of your control, which fall outside of the specific circumstances detailed above but which are deemed to have an impact on your education, the University will also take these into account in respect of your application. This consideration process will be on a case-by-case basis and will be decided primarily on the impact of the circumstances on your education. In this context the university may decide to assess your application against widening access entry requirements and in line with current contextual admissions policy. 

Examples of ‘other’ contextual circumstances which may have an impact can include but are not limited to; residing in an SIMD40 postcode area, have declared a disability or participated in a widening access programme such as Reach or SWAP.
