Eligibility for this course

Gateway to Medicine is a one-year course that is designed to support you towards starting our five-year medicine course. The course is open to Scottish residents from widening access backgrounds. 

To apply for this course you need to be living in Scotland (Scottish domiciled), be assessed as Home Scottish for fee status and either:

  • living in an SIMD 20 postcode area
  • be receiving free school meals
  • be a looked after person
  • be an unpaid carer
  • be a refugee, asylum seeker, or granted humanitarian protection
  • be estranged from your family

What is Team-Based Learning?

Team-Based Learning (TBL) is an active learning method that engages students in a structured approach. Students collaborate with their team to solve problems and receive immediate feedback.

Clinical experience is not required. There are many opportunities to learn valuable skills that do not require individuals to be in healthcare settings.

The personal statement is discussed at interview but is not scored, ranked or taken into account for interview selection.

Gateway to Medicine is a one-year course that is designed to support you towards starting our five-year medicine course. The course is open to Scottish residents from widening access backgrounds.

Progression to Medicine

Progression to the medicine A100 course will be dependent on passing:

  • all the Gateway modules and achieving an average B3 grade.
  • a professionalism portfolio.

There is no requirement to do a University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) or the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) during the Gateway year as part of admission to MBChB A100. An interview may be required for entry on to the Gateway course.
