The UKMED Research Subgroup and the purpose of this role

The role provides an opportunity for a skilled chairperson to lead discussions of experts in medical education data. The chair’s role is to enable the Research Subgroup to support the Strategy Board with academic expertise.

The UKMED Research Subgroup’s key remit is to assess research proposals against agreed criteria, and review findings to advise the UKMED Strategy Board on their quality and alignment with objectives. It also helps prioritise research topics, identifies funding opportunities, promotes UKMED research, and advises on overall research strategy and processes. Skills and experience

UKMED is seeking someone:

  • With demonstrable skill at chairing a multi-stakeholder meeting
  • Who has an understanding of the trainee pathway from application to medical school to working as a GP or consultant
  • Who has a track record and an understanding of quantitative medical education research
  • Who has some experience in statistics, data science, and/or qualitative research
  • Who is an active listener
  • Who is appropriately assertive and diplomatic and can lead the group to clear and actionable recommendations
  • Who is adaptable
  • Who can demonstrate integrity and emotional intelligence
  • Who has an understanding of the aims of UKMED
  • Supports equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) by promoting fair and inclusive practices within review process.

Are there any other criteria for the appointment?

As UKMED is committed to transparent research, applicants must be able to demonstrate the following:

    1. Support of UKMED’s intention to continue to publish research and online reports which identify organisations that manage medical education and
    2. To demonstrate that they have no conflict of interest with regard to such publications or describe how they would manage such conflicts if they have
    3. A willingness to represent the interests of UKMED at national groups such as COPMeD, the MSC and GMC boards.

Details of the appointment

You will need to commit to chair a minimum of 2 UKMED Research Subgroup meetings (in-person) and to attend a minimum of 2 UKMED Strategy Board (online) meetings a year.

In addition, you will score and review applications and project reports quarterly. There will be additional time required agreeing the papers and agenda with UKMED operational staff at the GMC and MSC and providing steer on ad-hoc requests e.g. resubmitted applications.

If the applicant is willing there is the potential to represent UKMED by speaking at conferences to promote its potential.

You will be eligible to claim travel and subsistence expenses (up to £250 per meeting) for attendance at the meetings and any conferences attended in your capacity as UKMED Research Subgroup chair.

UKMED is seeking to appoint the chair for 3 years commencing January 2027, with an opportunity to shadow a meeting on 19th November 2026.
