Achieved or predicted first or upper second class degree in any subject from a recognised institution. We expect that no more than five years will have elapsed between the most significant and relevant qualification and the start date of the course. If more than five years have elapsed since your degree, then your work since your degree will be considered. School qualifications in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and English will also be considered unless the degree offers a significant biomedical science component, a significant quantitative component and/or was taught in English.
The standard offer is A*AA, including Biology/Human Biology and Chemistry.
Those classified as contextual based on the school attended, receipt of free school meals or who are care-experienced will automatically receive a reduced offer of AAA.
Highers: Five subjects at grade A including, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English.
Advanced Highers: Two subjects (Chemistry and Biology) must be offered (grade requirements AA).
7,6,6 at Higher Level (including Biology and Chemistry) plus total points score of 32.
A total of seven GCSEs must be offered, and these will be used to calculate an applicant score (see website for details).
The required subjects are: English Language at grade 6/B or higher (English Literature is not required but is one of the identified subjects that we will score); Mathematics (or one of Methods in Mathematics and Applications of Mathematics) at grade 6/B or higher; and Biology and Chemistry or dual award science at grade 6/B or higher.

Enquiry-based learning (EBL) starts by posing questions, problems or scenarios. Students will identify and research issues and questions to develop their knowledge. This style is generally used in small-scale investigations and projects, as well as research.
Applicants’ predicted grades must be no lower than one grade below the relevant offer (i.e. AAA for our standard applicants).
Resit grades for GCSEs, A Levels or equivalent qualifications are not considered except as detailed in ‘extenuating circumstances’ on our website.
Clinical experience is not required. Relevant work experience (including voluntary roles and shadowing opportunities) can offer great insight of the complexities, demands and strategies of current healthcare practice and the benefits they obtain from caring for people and working in teams. However, we recognise that arranging, undertaking and effective reflection on face-to-face experiences requires a great deal of time and effort, and may not have been possible during the recent pandemic disruptions, so it is not mandatory.
Checked after the interview before offers are made.
All applicants must sit the UCAT test in their year of application. For Home applicants, the total UCAT score forms part of the overall admissions score used for ranking and shortlisting. For International applicants, the total score is used for ranking and shortlisting.
Multiple-mini interviews
Our work hopes to encourage school and college pupils to discover more about education, research and careers in biomedical science and healthcare. We are committed to supporting all pupils, especially those from a widening participation background, to access and engage with an excellent higher education experience.
The Pathways to Birmingham programmes are available to pupils at non-selective state schools across the West Midlands region, except the National Access Summer School which is open to Year 12 students from England and Wales (excluding the West Midlands). We are also part of the Realising Opportunities (RO) partnership which goes beyond the West Midlands.
We are proud to be part of UKWPMED (UK Widening Participation in Medicine), a collaboration of seven medical schools across the UK. Eligible students will automatically receive an interview at any of the participating schools, and if successful at interview will be given a reduced offer.
Students who successfully complete a Pathways to Birmingham programme (or one of our UKWPMED partner School’s programmes) will receive special consideration from admissions tutors, including a guaranteed interview for many specific schemes.
Our widening participation offer recognises the potential of students whose personal circumstances may have restricted achievement in school or college. If you are eligible to benefit from a widening participation offer, you will receive an offer which is one grade lower than the standard offer. You don’t need to apply for this – it will be assessed and applied at the point of application if you’re eligible.
For widening participation applicants who are made an offer following interview, the offer is ABB.
