Inclusivity in medical schools

Medical schools recognise that inequality and injustice still affect many people, based on who they are and where they come from. Despite ongoing efforts to make medicine more inclusive, students from diverse backgrounds continue to face significant challenges, particularly those with protected characteristics.

A core focus for MSC is ensuring equality, diversity, and inclusivity in medical education. Our goal is to provide all students with equal opportunities to study medicine and to make sure they feel welcomed and supported throughout their journey.

While medical schools have made significant progress, we provide guidance and support to share and implement best practices across the country. To address inequalities, we formed the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Alliance, bringing together EDI leads from UK medical schools to tackle common challenges and drive positive change.

Why it’s important

Diversity in medical education leads to a richer learning experience for all students. Research shows that students trained in inclusive environments are better prepared to serve diverse communities, ultimately leading to better health outcomes. By addressing exclusion in medical education, we can improve healthcare for marginalised groups who often face greater health inequities.

Incorporating inclusion in medical education also plays a vital role in tackling racial disparities within the NHS workforce, fostering a more supportive and inclusive culture for healthcare professionals.

Our work

Our guidance series, Active Inclusion: Challenging Exclusions in Medical Education, provides a framework to help medical schools create more inclusive environments. It supports schools in identifying and addressing exclusions faced by staff and students.

Taking an intersectional approach, the guidance acknowledges that individuals often experience multiple, overlapping forms of disadvantage. It highlights key areas of inequity and injustice, offering practical advice for medical schools.
