Women in Clinical Academia: Attracting and Developing the Medical and Dental Workforce of the Future

Data collected by the Medical Schools Council in the annual Clinical Academic Survey show that there is a gender disparity in clinical academic medicine and dentistry, which increases as women move up the career ladder, from lecturer to senior lecture to professor. To address this, the Medical Schools Council convened a Working Group in early 2006 to examine issues affecting the career progression of women in academic medicine and dentistry.

The Group has questioned students of both medicine and dentistry and clinical academics in both professions about their experiences and perceptions of a clinical academic career. The report of the Working Group, 'Women in Clinical Academia: Attracting and Developing the Medical and Dental Workforce of the Future', was formally launched with a conference at the Royal Society of Medicine, London, on 18 June 2007.
