Clinical Academics are those doctors and dentists who not only treat patients, but are also responsible for educating medical and dental students and for carrying out research into all aspects of health and disease. They are vital to educating the doctors and dentists of the future and to providing care at the highest of levels. In the context of an increasingly complex policy environment, the 2008 data update of clinical academic staffing levels identifies both opportunities and challenges for clinical academia.
Since 2000 the Medical Schools Council and the Dental Schools Council have undertaken a regular (annual since 2003) survey of clinical academic staffing levels in UK medical and dental schools, analysed within the current policy context.
The Medical Schools Council's annual survey of clinical academic staffing levels in UK medical schools reveals an increase in the number of clinical Professors, Senior Lecturers and Lecturers during the 2008-2009 academic year to a total of 3087 Full Time Equivalents. The increase provides evidence that sustained investment in early career grades is enabling more medical trainees to enter the clinical academic pathway.
Despite this, there are still some areas of concern including the under-representation of women at senior clinical academic grades and low staffing levels in some specialties.
