The Faculty of Medicine, supported by Southern Health Foundation Trust (SHFT), wishes to appoint a Professor of Psychiatry. The successful candidate will be someone who has won prestigious external funding and has demonstrable potential to acquire further independent funding. This academic post will function within the Faculty of Medicine, School of Clinical and Experimental Sciences (CES). The successful candidate will have a strong record of research and publication and will be expected to develop their own programme of research with support from clinical and laboratory-based colleagues. They will contribute to academic leadership within the Faculty and enhance the quality of our research, enterprise and teaching. Clinical duties will enhance the existing practice of psychiatry (adult mental health) within SHFT.

The successful candidate would be recognised as an eminent leader in their field of study. They would undertake clinical and basic research in the specialty of psychiatry, in line with the research strategy of the Faculty and School, teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and undertake leadership, management and engagement activities. They would be able to make judgements at a strategic level and contribute to the development of the external profile of the University in the UK and internationally.  

The successful candidate will hold a primary medical qualification and full registration with the GMC or equivalent organisation.  They will also have a MRCPsych or an equivalent recognised qualification, a certificate of completed specialist training (or equivalent) in adult psychiatry and a PhD or equivalent professional qualification or DM or equivalent relevant higher degree.

The University Department of Psychiatry is the principal focus for clinical research in general psychiatry, based at the Academic Centre in College Keep. Strong clinical research in affective disorders, psychopharmacology, alcohol use disorders and dementia are being augmented with increasing work in experimental psychopharmacology, neuroimaging and psychoneuroimmunology. The Department hosts the Centre for Workforce Wellbeing, a partnership between the Faculty and Health Education England (Wessex). There are close vibrant partnerships with Professor Garner and Professor Cortese within the School of Psychology on the Highfield Campus. The group also has strong research links with Primary Medical Care, and with other Schools including Biological Sciences and Nursing.
