Clinical Research Fellow in Hand Surgery (fixed term)

Clinical Research Fellow in Hand Surgery (fixed term)

University of Nottingham

Salary: £32569 to £47139 per annum, depending on skills and experience.

This research post at the University of Nottingham (UoN) based at the Centre for Evidence Based Hand Surgery (CEBHS), Queen's Medical Centre Campus.

The CEBHS is a collaboration between the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH), the UoN and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, working with patients and the wider community of all those involved in hand surgery care. Core membership comprises clinicians, academics and researchers from Academic Orthopaedics, Trauma and Sports Medicine and the Nottingham Clinical Trials Unit, offering a wealth of expertise and support in all areas of clinical research, but with emphasis on multi-centre randomized controlled trials.

Candidates should be committed to a career in academic hand surgery and are expected to register for a higher degree. Candidates may be from a trauma and orthopaedic or a plastic and reconstructive surgery background.  The successful candidate will be nurtured in an exciting environment surrounded by motivated colleagues at various stages of their academic career, demonstrating our long term commitment to our clinical academic trainees.

This one year post is intended to give an excellent opportunity to undertake background work to strengthen the successful candidate’s Research Council or NIHR clinical research fellowship application for follow-on funding of a PhD.  A suggested route would be to register for an MPhil at the start of the fellowship, with the aim of transferring to a PhD following a successful first year review (http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/academicservices/qualitymanual/researchdegreeprogrammes/phd-and-mphilregulations.aspx).

We are looking for a candidate with an eagerness to learn and a commitment to conducting clinical research of the highest methodological standards to complement and expand existing work at the Centre. The PhD could include mixed methods and can be tailored to the skills and interests of the individual. Potential research topics are below and some suggested background reading is attached. We are also open to a topic of the candidate’s choice.

•             Fracture dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal joints

•             Scaphoid fracture: diagnosis or non-union treatment

•             Radiotherapy for Dupuytren’s contracture

This post does not carry its own NTN. Any appointee who already holds a National Training Number (NTN) will be required to apply to their host clinical training programme for time out of programme for research (OOPR). Further information on the OOPR process is available from clinical training programme directors in the region in which the NTN is held.

This full time post will be offered on a fixed term contract starting from 01 February 2020 until 31 January 2021.
