NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Platform Science and Bioinformatics (Paediatrics or Renal Medicine)

University of Bristol

Continuing on the success of the NIHR-Clinical Lectureship scheme we are able to invite applications for a post within the NIHR theme of Platform Science and Bioinformatics. This post is open to candidates training in GMC specialties of paediatrics or renal medicine and provides an excellent opportunity for a trainee with outstanding potential to develop a successful career in academic paediatrics or renal medicine, within a thriving and supportive environment. Clinical training will be based in the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, the Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St Michael’s Hospital or the Richard Bright Renal Unit in Southmead Hospital. Research opportunities and environments in Bristol within this NIHR theme include platform science and bioinformatics related to glomerular disease, the use of large population-level datasets available through the UK Renal Registry, neonatology and various other areas of paediatric research. The research interests of applicants should complement existing research programmes.

The Clinical Lectureship is designed to provide postdoctoral support for a talented clinical academic with a bona fide interest in this research theme who has submitted their higher degree (PhD, MD or equivalent) prior to applying for the post. It provides 50% salary support to allow the clinician to set aside time to develop their academic skills with the remaining 50% funding provided for clinical training.

The Lectureship is available for a maximum of four years starting on or after 1st August 2018 and should enable the completion of clinical training, as well as the attainment of further support for research (e.g. intermediate or postdoctoral fellowship or personal grants) and experience in teaching.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact Prof Moin Saleem (m.saleem@bristol.ac.uk, paediatrics) or Dr Simon Satchell (s.c.satchell@bristol.ac.uk, renal medicine) for an informal discussion of the post including how the candidate’s particular research direction can be integrated and supported within existing research environments in Bristol under this NIHR theme, and/or Prof Debbie Sharp (debbie.sharp@bristol.ac.uk) for information on clinical academic training in Bristol.
