What is the UK Clinical Aptitude Test?

The UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) is used as part of the selection process by a number of UK Medical and Dental Schools to help them to choose among the high level of applicants applying to their courses.

The UKCAT is designed to test aptitude rather than academic achievement. It assesses a wide range of mental abilities and behavioural attributes which are considered important for doctors and dentists to possess.

Do I need to take the test?
If the medical school you are applying to requires the UKCAT, all UK, EU and the majority of International applicants must take the test, which can be taken in test centres around the world. You can find out whether you need to take this via the UCAS website.

If you are unsure if you are required to take the UKCAT contact the universities you are applying to.

A list of exempt candidates can be found on the UKCAT website.

Do I need to pay for the test?
You do have to pay to take the UKCAT. Registration and test fees depend on the test centre location, not on your place of residence or nationality. Up to date costs can be found on the UKCAT website.

Do I need to prepare for the test?
The UKCAT does not require any coaching or preparation. It is designed to test aptitude rather than academic ability and as a result does not draw on any specific areas of knowledge or curriculum that can be learnt. However, candidates are advised to practice answering the types of questions that are featured in the UKCAT to familiar themselves with the format and layout of the questions.
