‘Who gets the best jobs?’ was the question posed in last night’s BBC2 documentary on widening access to the top professions. Medicine was just one of the professions under fire by Richard Bilton as he looked at whether social class has an impact on the ability to get one of these ‘top jobs’.

During the programme it was alleged that it is necessary for prospective students to have gained work experience in a hospital setting, which is completely untrue.

Medical schools recognise that practical experience in a hospital setting can be hard to arrange and instead advise students to experience working in other health care settings.
