Medical Schools Council signs up to new joint statement on EU Data Protection Regulation

29.01.14

The Medical Schools Council has signed up to a new joint statement from leading non-commercial research organisations and academics about proposed amendments to the EU Data Protection Regulation.

This builds on a previous statement, to which the Medical Schools Council is also a signatory

MSC, like other signatories, has severe concerns that the proposed amendments will derail large amounts of important and ethical health research.

In signing up to this joint statement, the Medical Schools Council agrees that, in order to ensure that the Regulation facilitates ground-breaking medical and social research while protecting individuals:

  • the Council of Ministers should maintain the Commission’s text on Articles 81 and 83 and associated provisions when agreeing its general approach;
  • MEPs should oppose the LIBE Committee’s amendments to Articles 81 and 83 in the plenary vote; and
  • the Council of Ministers and European Commission should oppose the LIBE Committee’s amendments to Articles 81 and 83 in trilogue negotiations.

The joint statement can be accessed here.
